Possible selves, a term coined by Hazel Markus and Paula Nurius, are described as how an individual thinks about his or her potential and future. An individual’s possible selves are thought to be the cognitive link between past experiences and future hopes, desires, fears, and fantasies. Possible selves derive from representations of the self in the past and they include representations of the self in the future. Possible selves are imagined future states of the self, and ideas of the future are not always positive. Thus, the concept of possible selves covers references not only to states that are positively evaluated and anticipated with hope but also to those possibilities that one would like to avoid, perceiving them as potentially threatening.

Possible selves derive from representations of the self in the past and they include representations of the self in the future. They are different and separable from the cur- rent or now selves, yet are intimately connected to them. Possible future selves, for example, are not just any set “best possible future selves.” Possible selves have been defined as personalized representations of goals (Markus & Nurius, 1986) and comprise all of the futures that a person can envision for herself – that is, her “most cherished self-wishes” (Allport, 1961).
