In offshore production, oil and gas are extracted from the wells and brought to the surface to a host facility above the ocean surface. The type of facility depends on the location, water depth, climate and the facility’s size and capabilities. Global offshore oil production (including lease condensate and hydrocarbon gas liquids) from deepwater projects reached 9.3 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2015. Deepwater production, or production in water of depths greater than 125 meters, The process begins by drilling a hole deep into the earth. To do this, a long bit attached to a "drilling string" is used. The bit varies in diameter from five to 50 inches. After each section is drilled, a steel pipe slightly smaller than the hole diameter is dropped in and often cement is used to fill the gap. Onshore oil production requires the drilling of deep holes down into the earth’s surface to reach the oil below, much like offshore drilling but without the difficulty of deep water between the platform and the oil. Since the ground offers a solid base, the drilling structures and storage areas are built directly on the soil. Oil and gas wells produce a mixture of hydrocarbon gas, condensate or oil; water with dissolved minerals, usually including a large amount of salt; other gases, including nitrogen, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and possibly hydrogen sulfide (H 2S); and solids, including sand from the reservoir, dirt, scale, and corrosion products from the tubing. Offshore processing. The production plant can be considered to begin after the production wing valve on the oil well Christmas tree. The reservoir fluids from each well are piped through a flowline to a choke valve, which regulates the rate of flow and reduces the pressure of the fluids.

The separated fluids are measured and then either shipped, injected back into the reservoir, or flared. Differences between the process equipment (oil and gas separators, free-water knockouts, gas scrubbers, pumps, compressors, etc.) installed on a platform and those installed on land are minor (see Fig. 2 ). Offshore drilling is the process of extracting petroleum from reserves located beneath the Earth's oceans instead of reserves located on the mainland. Offshore oil rigs have developed greatly over the past years, and have become gigantic structures that house hundreds of people at a time. Offshore oil production involves environmental risks, most notably oil spills from oil tankers or pipelines transporting oil from the platform to onshore facilities, and from leaks and accidents on the platform.
